What Can I Expect from a Lactation Consultation?
You stay in the comfort of your home, and I travel to you! Once I arrive, I'll wash my hands and set up a special baby scale designed to measure your baby's milk intake. We will weigh the baby in just a diaper both before and after feeding.
We will start by chatting and going over your health history as well as your baby's. This is to check for any medical condition that may cause breastfeeding issues. You can tell me what your goals for breastfeeding or pumping are. It is different for every person, and that's okay. I will help you come up with a plan to meet your goal.
At the visit, you'll learn about the benefits of human milk and breastfeeding for both you and your baby. We will discuss your specific challenges, normal newborn behavior, sleep, milk production, nutrition during breastfeeding, herbal and other medications, bottle feeding, pumping and working, and more!
I'll examine your baby's oral anatomy to look for any features that may cause breastfeeding to be difficult. With gloves, I'll assess your baby's suck to make sure tongue movement is normal.
The baby can feed as soon as I arrive, or we can talk first and feed later if the timing works out that way. I'll show you the best latching techniques to help with pain and to help your baby get the most milk. We will measure baby's intake, then come up with a plan that works for both you and baby.
After the visit, you can contact me by phone or email with additional questions until the issue is resolved. Sometimes a second visit is needed, but not always.
I would love to help your family!
